How do you react to snobby retail sales people?

Ok. This just happened to me today, so excuse me if i sound like i%26#039;m ranting and raving! But, I walked into a little clothing boutique because I needed to find a dress to wear to a wedding and was completely ignored by the sales woman. She even did one of those up and down looks (if I had known there was dress code to go shopping I wouldn%26#039;t have worn my jeans and tennis shoes)! She then, was extraordinarily helpful to another group of ladies. I don%26#039;t want to sound like a different kind of snob, but I wanted to yell, %26quot;Hey, I have an undergraduate degree from Smith and Master%26#039;s from Princeton and just because I choose to spend my money on books and travel, it doesn%26#039;t mean you have to treat me like ****!%26quot; Argh. I was, and still am, so angry. I WAS going to buy something, but i just ended up walking out. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Or do i need to relax? :) And if it has happened to you, how did you handle it?

How do you react to snobby retail sales people?
never happened to me but you need to relax

just think your better than them but dont show it

just ignore
Reply:Didn%26#039;t you ever see the movie Pretty Woman? Same thing. Those stupid ho%26#039;s work for minimum wage and a commission but they think they own the world because they are high school grads, maybe. Should have said what you said here. I hate shopping but this used to happen to me at Nordstom back in the day and then when I would buy a good amount of stuff I would tell them nobody helped me and if they gave me a receipt with some chics name on it I would return it right there since they are basically stealing a commission at that point.
Reply:Realize you are dealing with people who have good days and bad days. Somedays they may not want to be there but they have to work too. The person may not realize they are taking things out on you/ or you maybe taking it more personal than it is. Somethings can happen and not have a thing to do with you. Let them know in a pleasant way, that you need the help. They maybe inexperience but cut them a break too.
Reply:That sucks! I have been in a similar situation, I would write a letter to the owner/manager and send a copy to the district office as well. No one should be pre judged when coming into a retail environment. Lets just hope she works off of commission and be glad she didn%26#039;t get your money. But it will help, after a few days of cooling off, to set down and write a proper professional letter to the company. Even if she never knows about it or doesn%26#039;t even get in trouble for it , at least you will feel better.
Reply:Shop elsewhere. Be sure to let the manager know why, preferably by letter. Name names, if you can. No need to rant, just something like Dear Manager, I was in your store on the afternoon of this date. I needed a wedding outfit, but your sales clerk Sandy behaved so rudely toward me that I took my business to Store X, where I was treated with courtesy. I won%26#039;t be back to your store. Just thought you should know. Sincerely, Me.
Reply:That%26#039;s never happen to me..Sorry you had to go through that. I wouldn%26#039;t have acted that way but when I go shopping all I ask is that you say hi or acknowledge me when I enter a small store like a boutique and help me when I ask for assistance.
Reply:I probably would have told the sales lady exactly what you told me. but that is just me... and i need to work on my anger issures... lol. you did the right thing.
Reply:Talk a little louder, and make eye contact. This might give off a slight Arie of authority and that you mean business. And actually don%26#039;t you? You are trying to make a business transaction. But, unless you are really into the place, ditch it. I never spend money in a store that has crappy customer service, as long as I can get the same of what I wanted somewhere else.
Reply:Next time ask to speak with the owner.

Then ask the owner if there are any sales people available to help you make a purchase as the other gals were to busy talking to help you.

I am sure you will recieve the finest of help by the owner of the shop as well as a nice discount for making them aware that they need new sales persons.
Reply:I always pull together a nice posh English accent. It seems to throw them off. I%26#039;m around brits quite a bit so I have managed to perfect it. It%26#039;s odd how Americans flip over something as silly as an accent. It%26#039;s also fun to see how long you can get away with it.
Reply:umm 1st off, discrimination much? totally look up some laws and acts and press charges lol, 2nd take a spoon from your drawer at home in your kitchen, sharpen this spoon(preferably with whetstone) til it has a fine point, go back to the store, wait until its dark and she walks to her car, run up to her with the knife and make her give you advice on a dress to wear to the wedding =D *cough* thats what I would do
Reply:You need to relax, because a retail sales clerk has nothing to be snobby about. I mean, the job does not require a college degree, so any snobbery by them has no basis in reality.
Reply:Speak to a manager. customer always first. mention the degree. lol
Reply:Sorry that you had such a horrible experience but it seems that sales personnel are becoming more and more snobbish. With my crazy antics, I probably would have interrupted the lady (I say that loosely) and asked to speak to her supervisor and unloaded on that person. Better luck next time.
Reply:Is this a situation that has occured with this associate in the past or your fisrt occurance? Unfortunatly everyone has a bad day.. I dont like to make excuses, but maybe that person was dealing with a personal problem and carried it to work and is just having a bad day. If you had experienced this poor customer service in the past, I would not do business with them, but if this is a first time i would give them another chance. If i am faced with a situation like this, i like to %26quot;kill them with kindness%26quot;, I have found that you can make it impossible for someone to treat you poorly.. Humble yourself and try to put a smile on their face..
Reply:One time this ****** was totally up in my grill throwing out all kinds of mad disrespect, so I was like, %26quot;Whoa there, calm down please%26quot;. But she didn%26#039;t.... so I capped that fool%26#039;s ***.
Reply:I think you should relax. Did you really need her help anyway? Personally I hate it when clerks follow me around in shops with things they %26quot;think I might like...%26quot; I%26#039;d rather just look on my own.
Reply:it happened to me, and all I did was buy alot more than I was going to buy, but I bought it off of a nicer sales person in the same store so that the nice person got the comission and not the snobby one
Reply:My sister has no problem talking to managers of such salespeople. I usually curse inside me and go somewhere else. Screw boutiques !
Reply:Exactly what you said - if they want to give me any attitude I will not spend my money there.......just walk out and remember the scene from Pretty Woman when the sales assistants were rude to her. You end up having the last laugh when they dont meet their sales target!
Reply:i hate people its proven that 95% of people are crooked and liars.my natural regard to not liking people would have probably made me express my feelings to her disrespect my shoving my foot up her *** to the knee.hope this helped.
Reply:Yes, it happens to me all the time. I am a mom of 3 so I dress for comfort not style as I have 2 boys and to say the least boys are not very clean therefore your not very clean for very long. Well my husband makes very good money, enough for me to shop where ever, when ever, really, and I must say that due to not being %26quot;in style%26quot; I get treated like crap, all the time. Normally what I do, is I will go in and see how they treat me and if they treat me poorly but I really want to spend money with them I will purchase what it is I want, maybe throw something else in on top, just to show them that I am not as poor as they may think and then ask to speak to their supervisor or owner of the store. I then let the owner know exactly how I was treated, and how it made me feel and let them know that I have no problem spending my money with them but not if that is how I am going to be treated, and I will tell them exactly how it will be, normally it goes something like %26quot; I will come in here again and spend more money with you, but next time if I am treated as poorly as I was today, or I see that rep treating someone else as bad as they did me, I will make sure never to spend a dime with you and will make sure that everyone I know knows what kind of business you are running, and I will also make sure to tell them and anyone they may know never to spend a dime in your store%26quot;. If I don%26#039;t want something that bad, or think that I can find it else where, I will walk out, not say a word, never return and still let everyone that I know, know what a terrible store it is. The best thing you can do in this situation is help them lose business for their poor customer service and make sure that you let your friends and family know what kind of service you recieved. Word of mouth goes a long way for a small business who depends on good customers to give them good words.
Reply:LOL, just watch Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

Pretend it doesn%26#039;t bother you, act like you%26#039;re gonna buy something, pull out your wads of cash or visa black card, and then say nevermind.
Reply:this happened to me when i went in to Salvatore Ferremgamo. I dont want to sound like im blowing my own horn, but i make a good living and i was dressed %26#039;causally%26#039; and i get the exact same up and down look and was ignored. it was infuritaing and i was going to buy something then my conscience kicked in and i left
Reply:I am glad that you walked out. Good customer service is a lost art these days. If someone looked me up and down and then snubbed me, I%26#039;d walk out too. There are plenty of other shops that would love your business and not think that they are somehow superior to you. Don%26#039;t worry about this. You did the right thing by leaving. If enough people leave when treated badly, these places will eventually go out of business!
